Big oil company propaganda using a heart! Just the free movie we require for Thanksgiving! This 78-minute semi-documentary from 1948 is one in the most lyrical American films ever made. In 1994, The Louisiana Story was selected for preservation inside the United States National Film Registry with the Library of Congress being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It is the story of your Cajun boy and his awesome family, living about the bayous in ways of life that people can barely imagine.
The boy's family rents land on the oil company, which comes in, drills, and leaves everything the same as it was, clean and unspoiled apart from the family features a little more money. (Yes, it had been funded through the Standard Oil Company.)
The boy spends most of his time on his narrow boat (pirogue), floating over the bayous, prime snake and alligator habitat, along with his pet raccoon. He never wears your life preserver or shoes... doesn't even have a cell phone to contact case he gets in danger. There is not much story, only a celebration (in these stunning white and black photography that you may well wonder what are the big deal is approximately color) of a way of life that's no longer with us.
All from the actors were amateurs, and for most, it was their only film. As of April 2007, J.C. Boudreaux, who unquestionably boy, was surviving in a FEMA trailer along with his wife of fifty-five years, after Hurricane Rita destroyed their house. (source). A grayscale silent film that ends using a woman being burned alive? Oh, yes, just what every family needs at Thanksgiving. But, I have 3 good reasons for including The Passion of Joan of Arc in this pair of free movies for Thanksgiving.
First, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was ever produced. Second, I am thankful that The Passion of Joan of Arc was preserved. The director Carl Theodor Dreyer (more) died convinced that the last copy had been destroyed. In a little weirdness that sounds a lot more like a movie compared to the truth, an almost complete print was found in 1981 in the janitor's closet of the Norwegian mental institution.
Finally, I am grateful that individuals can watch this magnificent film, on many lists with the greatest films ever, for free online at Gloria.tv, a Roman Catholic video site.
Maria Falconetti (more), who plays Joan, suffered an emotional breakdown through the making with this film, and she never made another film. Pauline Kael (more), a notoriously demanding film critic, asserted Falconetti's performance "may be the finest performance ever upon film."
